Players load into hexagonal worlds called oases, which in turn connect to a bunch of others across the globe as part of a larger world map.

To travel between these is quick, but requires water, a valuable resource which also powers the machines you use to climb over sand dunes and find more resources.

Early-stage walkers can't hold an awful lot of water, and therefore can't take you very far, prompting players to search for ways to upgrade or swap their machines.

You get the idea. As all the tiles and servers are connected across the globe allowing European and American players to intermingle, for instance I was a little worried about potential latency problems, but Donkey Crew project lead Florian Hofreither assured me this wouldn't be an issue.

So we decided to cap our servers at people per server, and doing our tests we've seen no issues. The walkers themselves are by far the most enticing aspect of Last Oasis: there's something really satisfying about their movement, along with the clacking and groaning noises they produce.

In total, there are 13 types of walker for players to choose from, some of which are better suited for certain tasks such as attacking or moving cargo.

All of them can be customised with extra parts at stationary trading posts - including slingshot cannons and darts, with options to power movement with either pedals or wings.

The larger ones can provide useful shelter if attacking other players, or better stability and health for fighting massive monsters in hunting parties.

Killing said creatures brings in some serious rewards - although you'll have to put up with being shaken about, as unfortunately the big monster fight felt a little nauseating when watching the demo.

Rather promisingly, it seems the devs have gone to great efforts to dial back the sort of griefing that undermines other PvP survival games, while also maintaining some level of danger.

Offline raiding isn't an option, while player-clans are given incentives to protect players that come into their territory. However, that is only true if you stay alive - once you get murdered, the clan loses your bonus.

It doesn't affect you as a solo player, but the clan will try to make sure that as many players as possible stay alive on their territory.

This is interesting because clans will never hunt in their own territory because they will damage themselves, and they would much rather hunt in the territory of enemy clans where they can damage them.

If being an asshole really is your thing, however, there are still opportunities for you - a little like the way space is controlled in Eve Online, there are territories which are uncontrolled by clans where players can effectively become pirates and hunt other players without consequences.

Well, unless that player has a bigger walker. But in theory, this means solo players should be able to avoid more hostile regions if they wish.

Overall, I'm still intrigued by the idea of roaming the wastes on the back of a crawling wooden structure and the possibility of building a walker armada - but I do have a couple of reservations.

Namely, it's difficult to see exactly how Last Oasis will work once handed over to a larger community, particularly as much of the game seems reliant on player-driven content.

While we got a brief glimpse at the player-driven economy at a trading post, it's hard to know exactly how this or the endgame will work out in practice until thousands of players get their hands on it.

And although the devs emphasised it's quick to travel and there are multiple biomes, I do wonder whether this game will end up feeling a little empty by virtue of being, well, a big old desert.

Will there be enough to keep me entertained beyond constructing and driving my first few walkers? In any case, we'll find out when Last Oasis enters Steam Early Access on 26th March , and as it develops over the coming years.

Guild Wars 2's move to Steam has been indefinitely delayed. The mayor, Chrysler Peavy, who knows Hester from her days with Shrike, frees Tom as he is a resident of London and Peavy wishes to learn etiquette worthy of a Londoner gentleman.

Tom convinces him to free Hester, and Peavy informs them that he plans to consume the downed Airhaven. While charging at it over shallow water, Tunbridge Wheels beaches on a coral reef, sinking it whilst the survivors escape inland with Tom and Hester.

Whilst attempting to feebly retake Airhaven, Peavy gets stuck in a bog and his pirate subordinates shoot him, then attempt to execute Tom and Hester, but Shrike intervenes and kills the remaining pirates.

Shrike explains to Hester that Crome had agreed to resurrect her as a Stalker similar to him after he brings back her body.

She agrees to this, but Tom intervenes by stabbing Shrike in the eye, shutting him down and saving her life. Valentine is sent away by Crome on a "secret mission", much to Katherine's dismay.

Suspicious of her father, Katherine begins investigating events in London with the help of Apprentice Engineer Bevis Pod, whom she befriends after discovering he witnessed Tom chasing Hester.

Tom and Hester are rescued by Fang, who is revealed to be an Anti-Traction League agent, and takes them to the Shield Wall of Batmunkh Gompa which protects the nation-state of the League.

Khan is skeptical that London will attack, but Fang insists that they should bomb London to destroy the weapon. Convinced that the League will kill innocent people and angry at the idea of destroying his home, Tom storms out and discovers Valentine has infiltrated Batmunkh Gompa as a monk.

Tom raises the alarm, but Valentine successfully cripples the League's northern fleet of airships. Valentine duels and kills Fang by stabbing her in the neck, before escaping in his own airship the 13th Floor Elevator.

He also admits that Katherine was likely Hester's half sister. Disillusioned, and horrified by the destructive power of the weapon, Katherine and Bevis conspire to plant a bomb to destroy MEDUSA, but are caught in their attempt.

Tom and Hester arrive, and Hester attempts to fight her way to Valentine to avenge her parents. Tom is attacked by the 13th Floor Elevator above London and shoots it down.

Bevis is killed when the airship crushes him, but Katherine is able to reach Saint Paul's Cathedral. Inside, she sees Hester brought before Valentine.

When he attempts to kill her, Katherine jumps in her father's way and is fatally wounded. Valentine and Hester, briefly putting aside their differences, try to take Katherine to Tom to get help, but she dies before they can reach him.

Hester leaves with Tom in the airship, while Valentine chooses to stay behind in London. Hester tries to comfort a grief-stricken Tom as they fly away in the Jenny Haniver , apparently the only survivors of the incident, and make their way to the Bird Roads.

Both Shrike and Smew are named after birds, and Pennyroyal is named after a flower. In the novel, it refers to the fact that the society of Municipal Darwinism is not sustainable living and that the cities' engines are indeed mortal.

Philip Reeve has stated that his plans to write a science fiction novel were laid in the late s. The original drafts were intended to be an adult novel but after several rejections, Scholastic said they might be interested in Mortal Engines as a children's story.

In the refactoring the story was simplified, removing several characters and much content such as the city politics that Reeve thought would not be interesting to children.

The Mortal Engines world was originally written as an alternative universe set in the early s, but Reeve says this turned out to require just too much explaining as how and where history could have diverged.

He was inspired to start then due to The War of the Worlds. On Goodreads , ''Mortal Engines'' has a score of 3.
